Bitumen
Testing Equipment / Asphalt
Testing Equipments
Our outstanding manufacturing facility have
enabled us in producing instruments for testing
the bitumen. Bitumen in particular is a mixture
of organic liquids which are highly viscous,
black, sticky, entirely soluble in carbon
disulfide. This material is composed of highly
condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
For testing this bitumen on varied parameters,
we use various equipment. Following are the
products we are offering under this category: |

KEWIL
Ring and Ball Apparatus
Ring and ball apparatus is meant for determining
soft point of bitumen. Using various scientific
principles it is also used in petroleum industry,
construction projects, paint industry etc.
The ring & ball apparatus is used to determine
the temperature at which a sample of bituminous
material loaded by a steel ball of 9.5 mm
diameter, drops a specified distance when
heated under specified conditions. It is used
to determine softening point of bitumen. |

Drilling Machines
Drilling machines are cutting tools used to
create cylindrical holes. They are also called
drill bits. Bits are held in a tool called
a drill, which rotates them and provides axial
force to create the hole. They are suitable
for taking out cylindrical cores upto diameter
of 6" (150mm) x 12" (300mm) high
from rocks, concrete blocks or air craft runway
slabs. |

Ductility Testing Apparatus
It is a very useful equipment for construction
industry for conducting ductility tests on
bituminous material. It is also equipped with
certain accessories.
Bitumen
binders are used in flexible pavement construction.
It is important for bituminous material
to form ductile thin film around the aggregates,
which serves as a binder. If the binder
material does not have sufficient ductility,
it leads to spurious pavement surface and
leads to development of cracks. Therefore
it is extremely important to carry out the
ductility test on bituminous material.
Ductility is defined as distance in centimeters
to which a standard briquette of bitumen
can be stretched before the thread breaks. The
briquette is stretched at a rate of 50 mm
/min. +/2.5 mm per minute at a temperature
of 27ºC +/0.5ºC.
The
apparatus consists of water bath with a
thermostatic heater and a circulating pump
to maintain uniform water temperature One
half of the briquette moulds is fixed on
a fixed plate in the water bath, the other
half of the briquette mould is fixed to
a carrier which slides over a rotating the
threaded shaft with a clutch. The motor
and gears to rotate the shaft are housed
in a cabinet fixed above the other end of
the bath. A pointer fixed to the carrier
moves over a scale graduated from 0-110
cm x 1 mm fixed on the bath with “0”
(Zero) of the scale towards the fixed plates
side. The rotating shaft has 2 speeds of
travel for the bracket, 5 cm/min and 1 cm/min.
selected by a clutch.
Water
bath inside is of S. steel, its is an insulated
water bath Water bath is provided with a
drain. A heater with thermostatic control
is fixed inside the water bath. Control
switches for motor pump heater and indicator
lamps are fixed at a convenient place on
the water bath. Complete with three briquette
moulds and one base plate, steel all made
of brass operates on 230V A.C. supply single
phase.

Marshall Stability Test Apparatus
It is a very important instrument ideal for
carrying out Marshall stability test of bituminous
mixture. It is easy to operate, highly efficiency
rate and has high degree of automation.
The apparatus is suitable for conducting
Marshall stability test of bituminous mixture.
The apparatus can truly judge the fail point
of bituminous mixtures to design the match
ratio or check the construction quality
of bitumen road surface. The Marshall stability
of a mix is defined as a maximum load carried
by a compacted specimen at a standard test
temperature of 60º C. The test is applicable
to hot mix designs using bitumen and aggregates
upto a maximum size of 25 mm.

Standard Penetrometer : IS : 1203
Standard Penetrometer is Used to determine
grade of bitumen. The penetration tests determine
consistency of bitumen for the purpose of
grading Depth in units 1/10 of millimeter
to which a standard needle having a standard
weight will penetrate vertically in a duration
of five seconds at a temperature of 25 ºC
determines penetration for gradation. Consists
of a vertical pillar mounted on a base provided
with leveling screw The head together with
dial gauge rod and cone (or needle) slides
on a pillar and can be clamped at required
height. A rack and pinion and pointer assembly
provides adjustment of needle or cone tip
to sample. It incorporates a slipping clutch
mechanism which make reading of penetration
and subsequesnt restting a simple and accurate
operation The dial is graduated in 400 1/10th
mm sub-divisions, and the red needle pointer
against black figures makes for easy reading.
Supplied
complete with one 50 gram weight, and one
100 gram weight and one needle.
Accessories
:
Penetrometer Cone : made of Gunmetal and
is fitted with a hardened and ground detachable
steel, tip and a stem, Total moving weight
is 150 + 0.1 gram.

Automatic Bituminous Compactor (Electrically
Operated)
KEWIL Compactor automatically stimulates hand
compaction as specified in ASTM D-1559 and
develops a uniformity in the test procedure.
The apparatus consists of a chain drive coupled
to the motor through a gear box, and carries
a locking device which lifts and releases
the hammer through a specified height. Fitted
with a counter which trips the motor automatically
after 50 or 75 strokes as set on it. Suitable
for operation on 220 V, 50 Hz, single phase
supply. |

Stripping Value Apparatus
Here is an informative page on important features,
specifications and applications of Stripping
Value Apparatus, used to measure stripping
value of bituminous mixture.
This
apparatus is used to determine stripping
value of bituminous mixture mixes having
size 1.0 mm to 75 microns. It is also used
to measure the resistance of bituminous
mixture to stripping of bitumen from rock
particles.
For determining the resistance of bituminous
mixture to stripping of the asphalt from
aggregate particles and for judgeing the
adhesive capacity of bituminous material.
Applied to aggregate fraction passing 9.525
mm sieve and retained on No.8 Sieve.
It consists of a disc on which four bottles
are mounted. The disc rotates at a rate
of 100 r.p.m. approx. The samples are kept
in bottles and agitated for 15 minutes.
The percentage of aggregate stripped is
estimated by visual observation. Provided
with a time switch. Suitable for
operation on 220 V, 50 Hz, single phase
supply.
